Pasaje de Chinitas, one of the most charming corners of Malaga

Chinitas

Pasaje de Chinitas is a picturesque pedestrian street in the heart of Malaga's historic centre, renowned for its characteristic cross shape. It connects Plaza de la Constitución with Calle Fresca and is distinguished by its narrow layout and evocative atmosphere, home to small shops, cafés and an inner square that invites contemplation. It was built in the 19th century after the demolition of the Convent of the Agustinas Descalzas, preserving the original façade as the entrance from the main square.

Its name is linked to the legendary Café Chinitas, an emblematic café-theatre that operated between 1857 and 1937. This venue was the epicentre of the city's cultural and bohemian life, welcoming figures from flamenco and literature such as Federico García Lorca, who immortalised it in one of his poems. The nickname ‘Chinitas’ comes from a well-known dramatic actor of the time. Today, the passageway retains its traditional atmosphere and remains one of the most charming and authentic corners of Malaga.
